The Melbourne and Mary Anderson Scholarship- Understanding and Remembering the Legacy
Melbourne and Mary Anderson are the parents of Lisa Rowe, the founder and executive chief officer of L.E.E.P To College Foundation, Inc.
Mary Anderson,(1938-2014) was the oldest girl of seven children. At a very young age, she and her family moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi and became a young cotton picker until she to moved to Chicago in the mid-50’s. Mary would later continue her education and become a Certified Nursing Assistant at All American Nursing Home where she served faithfully for over 50 years.
Mary was very active in her church community at Wilbur Chapel for 10 years as a senior usher in the Usher Ministry. She believed that service and giving to others was her main purpose in life. “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35
Melbourne (Marcial) Alexander Anderson (1927-2014) was the only child, born in Coloń, Panama and became a Naturalized citizen in 1968. Before moving to the United States in the early 60’s, he served as a clerk on the Canal Zone in Panama for many years. Later, as an United States citizen he became successful in business and entrepreneurship with his love of numbers. He began his career in sales, customer relations which ultimately lead him to his venture in janitorial services with his very own company, Mel Enterprise in the mid 70’s.
The Melbourne and Mary Anderson Scholarship & Education Fund- Leadership, Service and Entrepreneurship was established in 2014 to commemorate and celebrate the lives of Melbourne and Mary Anderson, parents of founder and Board Chair of The L.E.E.P TO COLLEGE FOUNDATION, INC. Up to $1,000.00 will be awarded to a student who has been accepted to a two or four year college/university dedicated to serving the under-served/underrepresented population with a college major/concentration in public service or related majors.
The spirit lives on through their daughter Lisa, dedicated to service and the entrepreneurial spirit. The Melbourne and Mary Anderson legacy continues by creating the opportunity to education and service.
